Noël 2006 Christmas

Friday, January 26th, 2007

2006 Christmas in Kangiqsualujjuaq. We got to celebrate it at the local community centre starting on the evening of the 24th. We had about 300-400 people in the gym every night except one night where it was too stormy. Kids were running around everywhere. We had square dances every night; for the first time since I was twelve years old I didn't dance at all at Christmas time. Children and elders then adults got candy bags on the evening of the 25th. There were games for all ages where you could win prizes. I won $5.00 by bringing a bottle of tylenol and another time I won $20 as third prize playing a game (I cannot remember what it was).  I got to see and spend time with my nuakuluk Scott Baron. He would smile at me when I would say Scottland yard, Scottie too hotty, Scott towel and beam me up Scotty. I guess the parents didn't think of me calling their son Scott towel when they named him. His my Scotty too hotty nuakuluk. His going to be five months in about a week. What a Scott Baron nallinartuq.

13th Aboriginal Festival

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

P1020545.jpg The "13th Aboriginal Festival" was on Friday November 24th to Sunday November 26th 2006, at the Toronto Skydome. I saw a pow wow that I wanted to see since three years. There were many booths with things to buy, booth for information on how to enter the Canadian Forces, how to become a Fireman or enter the RCMP. There was an inuk guy in one of the booth carving with soap stone.

We missed Susan Aglukark singing performance by one hour. There was dance competition of boys, girls, junior boys, junior girls, men and women. The dances they did were all different. One dance was "Fancy shawl" it was nice to see the girls dancing the fancy shawl moving in perfect harmony with the drum. Every dancer had beautiful regalia with all different colours. There were aboriginal people from Canada and the United states. I recommend to everyone to go see the "14th Aboriginal Festival" next year. Looking at the dances, sometimes I had tears, it was a very moving experience. Click to continue »

Mother’s day at Harriet’s in Dorval

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

P1010051.JPGMother's Day at Harriets in Dorval
Harriet Keleutak's home was a welcome place to several Inuit moms,  their children and me on Mother's Day. We feasted on uviluks, goose, dumplings, arctic arpic and blueberrry pie and fruit salad. Needless to say, everyone had a great time and left a few kilos heavier. To burn the calories away, all the moms joined their kids for a skipping activity. Rhoda Cookie stole the show!!! See here for more photos.
